The fence was giving way, caving in under the sheer weight of bodies. Nat was reminded of something out of World War One. One of the leading invaders, a balding man, scrambled to his feet, unharmed but for cuts and bruises, and ran towards them.

‘Please, just run!’ he yelled, ‘They’re making us do this!’

Nat grabbed his mate and pulled at his sleeve. He didn’t like the way the man’s arms were spiralling, like wild punches, against his expression and his words. ‘Mitch! Get back! Get back and call the police!’

But Mitch hadn’t taken it in. ‘Get off the fence!’ he wa s shouting. He kept on shouting it, even taking a couple of steps forward, only now looking to the man who was running straight at him.

He started to move aside just as the man hit.

Nat just had time to see Mitch go down underneath a flurry of blows, before he became aware that they were running at him too.

Men, women, even children. Sprinting towards him. Their faces were scared, they were calling to him for help, but their bodies were jerking and smashing the air.

Nat turned to run, managed a few steps.

They caught him.

He smelt perfume and aftershave and old clothes. The first fist caught him across the side of the face.

Then the heat and the crowd closed on him, and he went under, trying to fend off hundreds of blows, kicks, scratches, pleading with people who were pleading with him.

Darkness took him.

Alison was appalled to find herself walking regally over the fence, her feet crushing the bodies of the dead and the still living. They formed a bridge of flesh for her.

She loathed herself for every unwilling step.

It was a relief to walk on the ground again.

But then she saw Max ahead, beating and beating someone who was already on the ground, at the centre of dozens of people, a target that was motionless and being reduced still further.
